This technique is good when you want to understand large systems like a firm's offering, a company-wide initiative, or something abstract like a team or company's culture.
The technique is about splitting the system into its smallest atoms.
- Start by writing up the name or concept of the system. Let's say it's "Culture"
- Then below in columns, write the larger components that make up the system. Usually, these are 3-5 things, which for Culture could be "processes, symbols, and people" for example.
- For each component, write down the things that make up that specific component. Repeat for all columns.
- Then repeat this process for each new thing you write down until you can't break it down anymore.
- It will often look like a pyramid structure.
