This technique is good when you want to understand large systems like a firm's offering, a company-wide initiative, or something abstract like a team or company's culture.

The technique is about splitting the system into its smallest atoms.

  1. Start by writing up the name or concept of the system. Let's say it's "Culture"
  2. Then below in columns, write the larger components that make up the system. Usually, these are 3-5 things, which for Culture could be "processes, symbols, and people" for example.
  3. For each component, write down the things that make up that specific component. Repeat for all columns.
  4. Then repeat this process for each new thing you write down until you can't break it down anymore.
  5. It will often look like a pyramid structure.
