Affinity Map is a great way to produce many ideas for a specific topic or solution. It's easy to facilitate and requires few resources. It can be done in person or online, so you can also use it for hybrid or remote teams.

  1. Introduce the topic or question you want to be discussed with the group. You can have a visual aid with the topic or question at hand so that the team can see it.
  2. Give your team members post-its or papers where they can write down their thoughts or ideas about the matter at hand. Give them 10 minutes and no limit on how many ideas they can produce. One idea per piece of paper.
  3. Cluster together similar ideas in columns, and if many post-its have the same idea, simply stack them on top of each other. Involve the team as much as possible in this process.
  4. You can put ideas that don't fall naturally in any category on the side. It is okay to have some redundancy in ideas.
  5. Ask the team to find a name that best represents each column and write it on top of each column.

This activity can help your team in many ways from developing new product ideas, discussing strategy, identifying challenges, or simply finding ideas for the next social gathering!
